Environmental Groups preparing for fights against downtown NFL stadium
INDUSTRY - Some of the same environmental groups that opposed a bill granting full approval to local billionaire Ed Roski Jr.'s proposed NFL stadium are crying foul over a similar move by a competitor.
Concerned that another group may be seeking relief from state environmental laws, a coalition of environmental groups circulated a letter this week urging legislators not to support an exemption for a potential stadium in downtown Los Angeles.
The Sierra Club California and Planning and Conservation League are among nearly 70 groups warning state lawmakers that sports and entertainment company AEG shouldn't be granted the environmental exemption for the company's plan, according to the letter.They felt like the Industry bill was slipped in at the last minute, and they don't want to be caught off guard.
"I take these threats very, very seriously," said Tina Andolina, the legislative director for the Planning and Conservation League. "We did not see the Industry bill, tops 42 hours, before it was passed." Roski, CEO and chairman of Majestic Realty Co., sought and received help from the state legislature to get full approval for his $800-million, 75,000-seat project in Industry. Now it appears a former business partner is also seeking legislative assistance.
