Liberty Hill Creates "Green LA"

« Back to LALCV In The News

The Liberty Hill Foundation is unique in Los Angeles. The Liberty Hill Foundation partners with innovative and effective Los Angeles grassroots organizations to combat poverty and injustice, and help transform the "City of Angels" into a place that promises safety, equality and opportunity for everyone who lives here. Liberty Hill co-founder Sarah Pillsbury says, "Our motto is change, not charity - not to diminish the enormous and growing demand for charity - but because real change could make charity unnecessary." Liberty Hill dollars go the next step - organizing, advocating, creating change for the long term - actually securing affordable housing or jobs that pay a livable wage, or putting programs into elementary schools to stop prejudice before it turns into racism or gay-bashing Liberty Hill's Environmental Justice Fund is dedicated to improving public health in low-income communities that suffer disproportionately from environmental pollution. Only three percent of all charitable dollars go to environmental organizations, and only one-tenth of that three percent goes to environmental justice work. Liberty Hill Foundation has given away more than $2.4 million to environmental justice community organizations in Los Angeles County since 1996. Among the recipients are Amigos de la Rios, Pacoima Beautiful, Healthy Homes Collaborative, and Union de Vecinos. Liberty Hill began LibertyVote! to help excite, educate and engage lowpropensity voters around the critical issues of social justice, healthcare and the economy. By working closely with its grantees and offering technical assistance, voter education materials, and grants, together they were able to witness a significant increase in voter turnout among diverse racial and ethnic groups, and across many different neighborhoods in the region. Liberty Hill provided $67,000 in grants to help these nonprofits continue implementation of voter participation programs. In Addition, Liberty Hill has taken a valuable leadership position in the coalition of environmental organizations called Green LA. This coalition, which includes LALCV, is a working group committed to work towards a Just and Sustainable future for the City of Los Angeles. The Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters is the only environmental Political Action Committee in Los Angeles County. The mission of LALCV is to participate in the electoral process throughout the County of Los Angeles from an environmental perspective. We honor Liberty Hill for it’s commitment to Environmental Justice and the electoral process.
