Incorporated in 1987, the City of Santa Clarita consists of 40.5 square miles located in northwest Los Angeles County. The total population is 177,150, with a density of 3,730.6 persons per square mile. The median age is 33.4 and the median household income is $66,717. Santa Clarita has a five-member City Council. Councilmembers are elected for four-year terms; the Mayor is appointed by the council. As of 2004, there were 80,084 registered voters in the city with the following party affiliations:
Democrat: 25,933 (32.4%)
Republican: 37,861 (47.3%)
Decline-to-State: 13,002 (16.2%)
Other: 3,288 (4.1%)
Major environmental issues in Santa Clarita include the following:
Transportation: Caltrans projects automobile traffic through the Santa Clarita Valley will increase by nearly 100% by 2030.
Santa Clarita River: The Santa Clarita River is the last wild river in Southern California and adjacent riparian areas is are habitat for the threatened species.
Whittaker-Bermite site: former site for manufacturing fireworks, dynamite, oil-field explosives, and munitions is now polluted with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and perchlorate has leaked into the ground water.
