Incorporated in 1959, the City of Walnut consists of 8.9 square miles located in the San Gabriel Valley in eastern Los Angeles County. The total population is 32,486 with a density of 3,371.2 persons per square mile. The median age is 37.2 and the median household income is $92,109. Walnut has a five-member City Council. Councilmembers are elected for four-year terms; the Mayor is appointed by the council. As of 2009, there were 17,011 registered voters in the city with the following party affiliations:

  • Democrat: 5,788 (34%)

  • Republican: 5,152 (30.3%)

  • Decline-to-State: 5,479 (32.2%)

  • Major environmental issues in Walnut include the following:

  • Proposed NFL Football Stadium: the NFL stadium project proposed for City of Industry borders southeastern Walnut. Opposition to the stadium revolves around an inadequate environmental impact report (EIR) process and environmental concerns, primarily relating to traffic along CA-60, Grand Avenue, and Valley Boulevard. The city passed a resolution opposing the State Legislature’s passage of exemptions to the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) for this project.
