Whittier Mayor Pro-Tem Owen Newcomer Receives Key Environmental Endorsement
Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters Back Newcomer for Re-Election to Whittier City Council
L.A. COUNTY – Los Angeles County’s only political action committee dedicated to electing environmental champions in municipal elections today announced its support of Whittier Mayor-Pro Tempore Owen Newcomer. The Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters (LALCV), which has supported pro-environment candidates in Los Angeles County for more than three decades, previously endorsed Newcomer in his successful 2004 and 2008 re-election efforts.
“Owen Newcomer has championed environmental causes throughout his career on the Whittier City Council,” said LALCV President Jonathan Parfrey. “Especially with the environmental issues facing Whittier, it is incredibly important that there is an environmental ally like Owen serving on the Whittier City Council.”
Newcomer, who was first elected to the Whittier City Council in 2000, is running for his fourth term in order to focus on the responsible redevelopment of the Fred C. Nelles Youth Correctional Facility and his desire to improve public transportation options in Whittier by bringing the Metro light rail to the City. As a leader in Whittier for more than a decade, Newcomer has twice served as Mayor and he is currently the Chair of the California League of Cities’ Environmental Quality Policy Committee.
“Over the years I have worked to preserve our hills and historic neighborhoods and have helped the Greenway Trail go from dream to near completion,” said Newcomer. “I want to continue to steer Whittier into the future with an eye to preserving the best of our past.”
